Whimsical Felted Cactus

(As seen in the Stitch and Bitch 2008

Page a Day Calendar)

This pattern was inspired by my many trips to Arizona. I instantly fell in love with the desert flora,

but being “gardening challenged” growing the real thing became impossible.

Now, no gardening care is necessary and I can still enjoy the beauty of the desert!!

Supplies:

Size 13 16” circular needle

Cascade 220 – 1 skein each of

Color #9407 and #9410 (heathered greens)

Color 4147 yellow (divided into two separate balls)

Stitch Marker

Yarn or tapestry needle

Polyester stuffing

Tropical silk flower (optional)

Decorative Pot

Toothpicks (optional)

Gauge : Not important for this project

Cast on 46 stitches with one strand of each of the green yarns. Entire cactus is worked with double strand throughout.

Place marker and join taking care to ensure stitches are not twisted.

Row 1-6 Knit

Row 7 ( begin increase rows)*K2 K in front and back repeat from * to end of round, ending in a K2 (61 stitches)

Row 8-12 Knit

Row 13 Repeat row 7 (81 stitches)

Row 14-17 Knit

Row 18 Repeat row 7 (108 stitches)

Row 19-22 Knit

Row 23 *K1 K in front and back repeat from * to end of round ending in a K1 (162 stitches)

Row 24 Knit

Row 25 (begin decrease rows) *K2 tog K1 repeat from * to end of round (108 stitches)

Row 26-28 Knit

Row 29 Repeat row 25 (72 stitches)

Row 30-33 Knit

Row 34 Repeat row 25 (48 stitches)

Drop darker green and attach yellow yarn, continuing to work in double strand throughout.

Row 35-38 knit

Drop lighter green and attach another strand of yellow, continuing to work in double strand throughout.

Switch to dpns if necessary

Row 39 K1 *SSK K5 K2tog repeat from * to end of round (38 stitches)

Row 40 Knit

Row 41 *SSK K3 K2 tog repeat from * to end of round. (28 stitches)

Row 42 Knit

Row 43 *SSK K1 K2tog repeat from * to end of round (18 stitches)

Row 44 K1 *SSK K2 tog repeat from * to one remaining stitch, K1(10 stitches)

Approximate finished dimensions (before felting) 16 inches (at widest point) by 14 inches. Dimensions do not have to be exact as each cactus will be unique.

Finishing:

Break yarn, attach tapestry needle and draw through remaining stitches to gather at top, pull tight and secure yarn.

To finish, felt by desired method until no stitch definition is seen. Manually shape and stuff with plastic shopping bags to maintain desired shape. Air dry.

Stuff dry cactus with polyester stuffing and sew bottom shut (stitching is not important here as this will be planted in the pot)

Add French knots in striped pattern down sides of “cactus” with yellow yarn, punch toothpicks through knots and into “cactus” for spines.

Do NOT use toothpicks in homes with children or climbing pets.

Attach flower to top (this can be omitted) and “plant” in decorative pot.

Inheritance

I have a new friend, and we will call her "I". You know I like using initials only, to protect the innocent, or not so innocent. "I" is a new knitter. A new knitter with an obsession or as I like to call it, a hungry dog on a bone. Her mother in law started her on the path, fueled in part by me. Then she signed up for a class, which leads me to today's subject...inherited projects.

So, her first real "project" is a baby sweater. A top down, no sew raglan. Ok, experienced knitters, easy enough, right??? Well, it is not the first project I would give someone. The teacher who is somewhat of a knitting snob and has taken a dislike to "I", says "Oh anyone can do this". In my kitchen, she repeated the collar portion at least 4 times....... And to make matters worse, she promised this sweater to someone. She has broken rule #1 for gift knitting, do not tell anyone you are making them something, or what the object is because you will ultimately hit a snafu.

It is now referred to as the F-in' yellow baby sweater from hell. I go to visit her at her office. The sweater is in the bag, and has now made it past the collar and working on the yoke. This is where the fun begins. "Can you fix this"?? Sure. Well, now it seems that I have to finish it. I took it home. It is all over. "I" waved the white flag of surrender and I must pick up the needles and continue to wage war with this yellow yarn. Today while we have knitting time in my kitchen, I will find her some new projects, while I work on the sweater. Pictures to follow.

I think I will introduce her today to the MDK Ball Band dihcloth. Hey if you are going to be obsessed, why not go all the way. You all know what fondness I have for those, right???

Cashmere Found!

Look what I found!!! FOUR skeins of worsted weight cashmere in a gorgeous deep purple. There is about 400+ yards. Now the question here is what should I make with it?? Any ideas??? Please leave a comment if you know of a great pattern for this beautiful yarn!!!
Dear B (thanks for your comment!), and the other inquiring cashmere knitters.....

While I would love to say that these balls of cashmere goodness rained down from the sky, I found them hidden in the bottom of one of my yarn "tubs" that we all have!!!! I have no idea WHY I purchased it or for what. Chances are I was sucked in by both the color and softness!!!

Another Hat!!!!

So when last we spoke, I confessed to my complete lack of concentration and the ability to follow a simple rib pattern. Well armed with a fresh skein of Lorna's Laces and my size 7 circulars, I started, and completed the ribbed hat!!! Lookee here:

I love this hat! No, I mean LOVE. Why?? Well Mark used to tell me I looked horrible in hats and honestly, after seeing a few photos of me on vacation, I do. But this hat looks, dare I say it, not bad.I have been running lately (mostly inside due to some lower leg injuries that occurred in days of yore) but sometimes I run the beach. And I do need a hat. Really now, it is windy and cold, and yet I refuse.

So if you are down in Hull, MA and you see a runner on the beach in black with one bad ass hat, and you think, that looks like the Irving Park colorway from Lorna's Laces, that would be me. And it wouldn't be so bad to stop me to say hi, I just might need a break!

Next up, mitts to match!!!

And finally, we have my gift knitting from 2007.......I made all of this in such a short amount of time, I needed super quick knits with no concentration allowed. It was a rough Fall, to say the least!

First we have "Fetchings". Honestly this is one of my favorite patterns of all time!! Super quick and in my opinion, make the best gifts!! If you got a pair as a gift, wouldn't you be thrilled?? I paired them with matching earrings. These two are knitted using Mission Falls 1824 Wool (another favorite). Another pair was made in red pepper using Knitpicks Swish, but the photo did not do them justice!

Next up, we have the Ribbed Cap from 101 One Skein Wonders. This is an easy hat, very comfortable, minimal shaping and cute. Both were gifts. Well, let me rephrase that, one ended up gifted. The other had to be ripped out!!! I got to the decreases on the gray one and realized the rib was supposed to be K2 P2!!! Heh. See??? I told you I cannot concentrate!! Both were knitted in Cascade 220. This pattern might end up to be my old standby hat!

I saw this pattern on Mag Knits and knew I had to knit it. It's great! And easy 12 row repeat that looks more complicated than it is! Knit in Swish from Knitpicks in the Camel Heather colorway, this yarn blocked like a champ!!! I think this took me 4 days! I made this for a friend and he LOVED it.
Last but not least.... I learned a valuable lesson of practice what you preach. I purchased some time ago, Morehouse Merino to make the "leglets" from their free pattern section. This is a great stash buster, if you ask me! About 200 yards or so of worsted weight! Who doesn't have that in their stash??? And I just love the length, they can be worn "dancer style" slouch over the heels. Great for yoga! Well, little did I know that the 2 skeins were so very DIFFERENT. LOOK!!! I was shocked. I didn't alternate skeins and I paid the price. Well, now they are mine because I couldn't give them away like that, right?? I did love the wool, it was soft, squooshy and very warm! So I made another pair in Lorna's Laces in the Black Purl Colorway.....much better.

And right now I am making a ribbed cap for me, in Lorna's Laces Irving Park for my beach runs.....and so far I am using the correct rib!!! :) More later........ I promise to try to update at least once a week........

Can it really be over a month since I updated?? And yes, the pictures I promised are still in the camera. I will get to them this weekend!!! I am still finishing up some gifts....I am so behind this year!!

And thanks for all your kind compliments on my pattern featured in the Stitch and Bitch 2008 Page A Day Calendar!! I am February 1st!!! I still have yet to see it. My bookshop was out of them, and I am still waiting for my free copy, which should be here soon....I hope!!! For those of you who do not have it, I will be posting it as a freebie shortly!! And there is another freebie pattern in the works as well. My "goal this year" is to make a pattern each month and post it here. I am feeling much more creative these days!!!

Now really, it has been way too long. Does anyone still read this thing?? Honestly people, it has been very hard to blog these days, as I'm sure you understand. Dear Knitting Blog Readers,

Well, it is my 100th post and I was so hoping to publish pictures and patterns and all kinds of fun yarny goodness, but my husband died suddenly on Monday. If you read my other blog you know this, if not and you keep checking back thinking I have either forgotten how to type and/or knit, no. This is not what I wanted my 100th post to be, but it is, so I will be back, after all knitting is good therapy, right??? Until then, knit on.

My husband loved to make fun on my knitting. In a nice way of course. ::wink:: and always interupted me while I was counting stitches or doing that all important lace row. So if you see me knitting in public someplace in the Boston area, please feel free to interrupt me!! Ha ha!!! Secretly I always thought he wanted to learn to knit!

Look out, it's pictures!!

First up, my "Fetching" gloves. Keep in mind they need a wee bit of blocking! Like I have said before, I LOVE this yarn and finally ordered another skein in purple ("Wisterious" to be exact!)! You know at 250 yds, I bet I could make two pairs out of one skein! I did take another picture of them on my hand, but I didn't like how my hand looked. (Note: now that fall is here I really should use hand cream more!!!) I'll retake it soon!!
Next here is the Noni pattern I just had to have!!! I ordered the whole ball of wax from kpixie. (This is a wonderful web shop! Jessica and Missa have a great selection and ship faster than lightening!) Yarn, feet, handles, zipper and pattern. Now I think it needs some pig piggie fabric for a lining, don't you think! I can't wait to start it! If it come out nice, my friend wants one too! I just might be making an entire pig family!
Ok, well that is all I have to say today! I better get going and start cooking supper. Somehow I don't think Mark would like a big bowl of yarn for dinner....or would he??? :)

Ancient Whorls!

I cannot believe I completely forgot to post this picture!! My poor husband can't go anywhere without being reminded of knitting. One day, he WILL knit. I keep trying to get him to learn, I think it will be relaxing for him, and hey you have a built in yarn shop and teacher, what more could you want?

So check this out! Remember I went to Philly last weekend? This was in the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Whorls from the 8th CENTURY BCE from Rome! Isn't that cool????? When I pointed it out, he just said "Oh God, more knitting!!", and stood quietly while I took SEVERAL images, just in case one of them did not come out! Ha ha!

I did take a picture of my Fetching Mitts but I think I need another one. I'm still experimenting with finding a good place in the new house for photos! Maybe tomorrow!

Well, finally got the knitting "mojo" working again, thanks in part to dishcloths. Come on, ya know you love 'em!!! So Lynnea, you were right!!! :)

I had hoped to show you a cool dishcloth picture with my new kitchen as a backdrop, AND the new "Fetching" gloves made for me on my trip to Philly (Thank you again Amy for the wonderful "Dream In Color" yarn you sent. It is beautiful, the perfect color and my new obsession!!! If you have never knit with this yarn, it is awesome ladies!!!), BUT it is POURING outside. I can't complain we need the rain badly, but it is too dark for photos!

I do have a picture though. I was surfing the other day and found this:

And the "evil" ladies (no they are really not evil, but they do tempt you with yarn!) at Blue Moon Fiber Arts, have NEW sock yarn coming out on November 5th. Now see, you really do need a bank to save your yarn pennies in!!!

The Slump

Well my friends, I am in a knitting slump. I can't seem to concentrate, and tried to knit the "litte arrowhead lace" from the Penobscot scarf from Interweave about 3 times. It's an easy four row repeat but apparently it has overloaded the circuits in my brain! My friend Lynnea suggested dishcloths because they always pull her out of slump, so I might make a few more. The Sugar and Cream cotton was on sale last week and I picked up some of the new self striping and tweed! To keep you entertained while I fight back with new yarn and a new project, check this out! (Ok, it is for the knitting content! Holy Knit One Purl Two Batman!! And she has a knitting needle in her hand (looks like a size 11 to me!!)

A Finished Project. Can You Believe It???

Ok, faithful readers, at least I hope you still stop by here to read my blog, here is proof I have been knitting. Naturally it is not much, but here is my completed dog sweater. Or as I call it Dog Sweater Version 1.0.
The Book: Dogs in Knits by Judith L Swartz
The Pattern : Basic Knitted Dog Sweater
The Yarn: Ella Rae Classic in Mauve
The Needles: Size 7 Bamboo

I did a slight modification to the pattern by adding a crochet edge around the arm openings and bottom. (Hence the Version 1.0) It was an easy knit and this pattern is the perfect jump off point for a whole wardrobe of funky dog wear! For the next one, I will use smaller needles, for more stitch definition and a tighter ribbing. I will also decrease the size of the back, it is a tad long and gets caught in her curly pug tail. There were no complaints from the recipient however, and she was very willing to sit for the fitting!!

I have made other goodies too, but I need to get pictures of them. I just wanted to let you know I still knit and not just by yarn!!!

An update:

I finally got an answer via email, late last night. 125 yds. There. That wasn't so hard, was it??? No apology, just a "best regards" and that's it. Why couldn't that have been done in the first place? Sigh. But I got the answer I needed.

Sorry guys if I seem to be crabbing quite a bit on this blog. I really am not that way. It's the move. (yah, that's it, the move!) If I can make it though the next week, I'm golden and will be back to my obsessively knitting self in no time flat!!! Thanks to everyone for their emails and support! Especially, Amy who offered her complaint writing skills! I may take you up on that offer someday girlfriend!

And now, back to knitting dishcloths for my new kitchen!! One week from today, I will be in the new house!!! :) Now that's a reason to smile!

So as I was packing up my yarn (I hope the moving guys have good strong backs, ha ha!) I noticed that the most wonderful pashmina that I was so EXCITED to get from School Products had no label. I decided to email them right away before the yarn was gone, to get the yardage. A nice thing to know if you are making something.

Here is my email:

"Hi! I was in your store last weekend and purchased some pashmina (pink) and
I didn't write down the yardage. It was $6.50 per hank. Could you please
tell me what it is so I can plan my project?? Thank you!"

And here is the response:

Please look for the yardage on our web-site www.schoolproducts.com but the price is $15, if you paid only $6.50, you were charged wrong, sorry.

Now I am not dumb, by any means. I checked the website FIRST and there is NOTHING on there, much less any item similar priced at $15. It was the ONLY pashmina in the shop. I am disgusted and PISSED. I spent over $300 that day and when I surrendered my charge card, they could NOT have been NICER. Now, my request is not the unreasonable. And it is NOT MY PROBLEM if you under charged me. That is a hazard of business. It happened at my old job several times and the price must be honored, period. No matter how wrong it was. As a business you suck it up or lose business asking for the $$ back.

So ladies, if you are in NYC, may I suggest shopping at one of the other MANY knit shops in NYC, like Purl Soho. You may pay a bit more, but the customer service will be there when you leave town.

Anyone have a yardstick handy????

And the saga continues.....

So I just "spoke" with the owner via email who was a bit "nicer" when I said I would be shopping elsewhere and stated that she has "excellent" customer service. HA!!! She told me to call the shop in the morning. Hmmm. No apology. Do you think I will ever get the answer? Do YOU live in Manhattan??? If you go there, would you check for me??

Well, two posts in the SAME week, write this down!! Ha ha!! actually I am up early, updating my site and the blogs and I just thought I would send a "public" shout out to my "No Sheep For You" secret pal!! Well, she's not so secret anymore and we finally had the big reveal!!! Thank you Phara for all the little goodies and the yarn!!! I love it all!! And guess what she is an interior designer!! I just might be needing her services soon with the new house!! Phara, will you do a trade for yarn??? :)

I'll try to get some pictures of the works in progress now. Funny, I was at the hair salon (getting my roots touched up) and knitting and I wondered why I was getting a weird look. I usually knit in there and don't get looks. Then I figured it out! The front placket for Gillie's sweater looks surprisingly like a pair of thong underwear!!! ROTFL!!!! I wonder if they think I am knitting my own undies now!!! Bwhahahahaha!!!

Yarny Goodness

So here is my loot from School Products!!! I LOVE that place. I labeled most of it on the picture. The cone in the middle is 1.6 POUNDS of super wash sport weight merino!!! And I also got a LARGE helping of yak which is so unbelievably soft in a nice cream color that didn't make the picture!!!

And just in case you were wondering what I am going to make with all this....I don't know!! I will be accepting suggestions!!! I really want to make something special with the pashmina. I think there is about 150 yds each on the skein. Maybe gloves????

I finally finished the back to Gillie's new dog sweater and started the front panel this morning. And I even started a new Chevron scarf in my favorite yarn, Cider Moon!

Well, after my felted cactus gained a spot in the coveted "Stitch and Bitch"Calendar for 2008, I have been thinking of making more knitted sculpture. Knitting=art after all, well to me. I stumbled upon this while surfing. Click on it. I dare ya. It will take your breath away.

Now I have always LOVED the sea, after all I don't live that far from it, and it fascinates me. But even if you don't care for it, I dare ya to say it is not amazing!!!

PS. Started a dog sweater today. I'm tired of the scarves (finally!).

And of a finished object, no less!!! I blocked this quite awhile ago, and never got around to taking a picture of it! I'm really not satisfied with the picture, the color of the yarn is very hard to photograph. The color is a bit more vibrant in real life!

Needles: Size 6 Aluminum

I scored a haul the other day at my Mothers! I went over there because I needed to escape while the house was being shown and she had this for me! The yarn (Peaches and Creme) was found at Wal Mart of 75 cents a skein. 75 Cents!!!! Naturally, she bought two of every color. There was MORE but I started making dishcloths for the new house already!!

There was also "Knit Mittens" which was a book I wanted for awhile. Her friend gave it to her, and she passed it on! And look, WORKBASKETS!!!! For those of you who are new to knitting, or are too young to remember, "The Workbasket" was a magazine published in the 30's through the 80's. It was monthly and featured "housewifey" things like crafts, recipes and homemaking tips! I can remember my mother waiting patiently for it to arrive! Now I collect them!! Again these were passed down to her and she gave them to me!!

Look at the publishing date on this one!!! 40 Years old....like me!!! :)

More later!! I'm almost done with my last Argosy and the "Element" scarf and I can start new projects!!!

Sorry no pictures this post! I just wanted to say I am alive and well and still knitting. Right now, I am blocking a scarf I finished a LONG time ago (the "Argosy" made with Rowan Calmer!), finishing up the SECOND "Argosy" (Cider Moon Taos!) and finishing the "Element" scarf. My mission, should I choose to accept, it is to actually FINISH all started "on the needle" items BEFORE starting something new. The key here is before. I love to start new things, get them "almost" done ( like the blocking part), and leave them. I am trying my best to BREAK this vicious circle.

I have several new projects just waiting to go on the needles, yarn to wind, and all of it MUST sit there until I complete more. I even found a pair of "Fetchings" without thumbs!!! Now seriously, how long doe sit take to knit a thumb???? Not long. I will get to those this week!

Tonight is a good night for telly, Family Guy AND Hell's Kitchen (gotta love FOX) so I will be attempting the impossible....finishing up stuff while I watch. Somehow writing all this down makes me do it. Like y'all are going to hold me accountable for my lack of ambition!! :)

Now if I can find a way to read, watch tv, and knit, imagine the possibilities!!!

Pictures of the long awaited Chevron. I do have to say, I really, really LOVE how it came out. I did make it a bit shorter as I am not the type to wear the scarf around my head. My bohemian days are over....ha ha!!! But all in all, it was a fun knit that I would make again. In fact I have TWO more colorways picked out! The think the colorways are prettier in person, they seem a bit washed out in the photo, but you get the general idea!

I'm well on my way to finishing up some of these projects!! And considering everything I have going on, that's something. I guess beteween writing the project list AND doing small knitted items, I can actually finish what I start!

Hallelujah!!! I FINALLY finished my chevron scarf!!!!! Wow!!! It is being blocked in my guest room as we speak! I absolutely LOVE how it came out and will definitely do a photo shoot of the finished object later this week!!!

OK, I will admit it, I am powerless to the siren song of fiber. And for those of you who think I broke down and bought the new STR colors, no I didn't. At least not yet anyway! But you've all heard me rave about the yarn from Jacki and Gail at Cider Moon, right?? Well they are having a SALE!!! More importantly, a sale on my favorite yarn they dye called Glacier. And they have new colors. And it is 20% off. 20%.

Now let's work on justifying the FOUR skeins I bought last night. Now while it is definitely not going to break my budget, after all I only bought FOUR!!! :) I plan on using them to make gifts for my friends for the holidays. OK, one skein was for me, because I should wear something *I* made. So the purchase will be put to good use, and I am helping a small business grow! So there, it's OK that I made a purchase!

I will snap a picture of my colors when it arrives! And did anyone see the wonderful chevron made by Not Scarlett with the Glacier yarn??? It's stunning! I have two skeins that will be PERFECT for this and as soon as I finish the one on the needles, I'm casting on for that one!

I have a showing of the house in a little while so I think I will knit until I have to pack up the dogs, and the husband and hit the road. I'm taking a ride to the lighthouse and it is such a gorgeous day, I'm bringing my camera!

Well, I see the kind ladies at Blue Moon have done it to me again! NEW COLORS!!! New. Colors. Ok, I hate to talk about this, but I am supposed to be watching my spending. At least until the move and we sell my current house. So unless I get "discovered" by a Hollywood agent or wake up tomorrow a princess royal, the spending must stop! These BMFA people are making it very difficult at the moment!

Sorry I just had to vent there. And yes, my chevron scarf has gained some serious length these past few days! I am excited about that!

Wow, Have I been delinquent about posting or what?? Sometimes life gets in the way you know. I have been knitting and I WILL have some new pictures this week, but I have to say THANK YOU to my secret pal ("orange peel") in the No Sheep For You Swap!! She sent me a wonderful package and while I DID sent her a private thank you in a message, she certainly deserves a public thanks as well. Here is what I got!!!

First off, there was a skein of the most unique yarn I have ever seen. It has these tufts that look almost like pom poms!! And it is definitely in my color palette! She even included a pattern for the yarn from her LYS!! And then there was yummy coffee, some tea and some adorable napkins. How did you know pal that I spill everything?? Those napkins will come in very handy!!! :) And last but certainly not least are the AWESOME stitch markers!! I just love the color combination of the poly clay beads!!! I am definitely putting those to use!!!

So thank you pal, for your kindness and generosity!! I can't wait to find out who you are!!!!

Well, I'm happy to say, my Tea Swap 3 package AND my No Sheep for You Secret Pal package has been shipped. Phew!!! This has been a roller coaster of a week for me and I'm surprised I got them packed, wrapped and shipped!! Good News!! I AM moving to a new house soon!!! I've been like a gerbil on a wheel lately but this has made me surprisingly efficient. I think that is because I carry a notebook around and have been writing everything down! It's great, aside from the fact I have NOT been knitting at all!! Even at night. I am just so tired!!!

I also want to say thanks to everyone for the response to my Argosy knitalong!! If you haven't seen it, it's here and EVERYONE is welcome to join!!! I need to make some Argosy dishcloths for my new kitchen!!!!

Summer Knitting Goals

Well, there is one thing that is good about a blog, and that it makes you set goals, and for some strange reason, I think if I blog about them, I will actually finish them. So there is a contest, sponsored by Skeins Her Way and I read about it on B's Blog!!! Now let me say this, I'm going to keep it realistic people. Ok, semi realistic. I know I am not going to find the time to knit an entire aran sweater, matching tam and scarf. Maybe the scarf, but seriously. And I really do NOT need another sweater. I have a drawer FULL. So with that, I give you My Summer Knitting.

1. The Chevron Scarf. (Yes, my STR finally arrived and now that I have colors to work with that I like, I'm there!!)]

2. Thurmmed Mittens. (I got the kit form B and dang it (sorry I just went Southern on y'all) I will make them!!!)

3. Fetching Gloves for ME!!! (Somehow I make them, and I can't keep them. So I would like my OWN pair!!)

4. Gillie's Dog Sweater. (I have started one, so either I must finish it or make somethign for the poor little thing to wear!!)

5. TWO Argosy scarves (Those will be Christmas presents)

6. Finish the lace scarf I have been designing.

7. The Friday Scarf

So that's it. Small, and realistic. Did I mention that I will be looking for a new house and possibly moving too?? So if I do half, it will be a miracle!!!!

Here is my new scarf I am working on, until my STR arrive.

This is my "newest" project bag! I confess, I LOVE totes and bags and knitting just gives me an excuse to buy more. This is from Etsy! Inside there is a section for dpns, a pocket for patterns and plenty of room. There is even a grommet on the end, for your yarn to poke through.
What a great idea!

And last, I ordered MORE yarn from Cider Moon!!! Not only is the yarn beautifully done, they are nice people too!!! The darker more "purpley" color skein is a ONE AND ONLY!!! I can definitely see that in an Argosy scarf, could you???

Warning, Long Post Ahead......

OK, I'm back.....still playing catch up with it all (mail, email, bills, laundry, stuff) but I am here. Did we have fun, you bet! I will post some pictures on my "other" blog soon. I just finished them up and now just need to make a little album. Did I knit, yes!!! I started this scarf, with Lemongrass medium weight "STR" and I LOVE it (picture to come soon!) It was the perfect travel project!!! I even was knitting before Mark's big event. I could fit it in my evening bag!! OK, so it's alarger than normal evening bag, but I could still carry it around. I even took a picture of Mark all in his cap and gown holding the knitting, ala The Yarn Harlot and her travelling sock. See??? He was a bit embarrassed to hold the knitting, but he did it anyway!! I married a good sport!

And I am in two swaps this Summer and I am really enjoying them. It's going to be a busy knitting season!! One is the "No Sheep For You" Non Wool Swap. Shhh...this one is a secret swap. I have been getting to know my "swapee", and it is fun!!! Honestly, I LOVE wool, so I am hoping this will help "broaden my horizons" as they say to new fiber. Yes, I do knit with cotton and I love it, but I am looking forward to trying something new and funky!

The second swap is the Knitter's Tea Swap, right here on blogger! I was in this last year and really enjoyed it. The one difference about it this time is we KNOW our pal and trade with each other!! My partner is Amy (HI AMY!!!) And oh I have great plans for this package of gifts!!! I already ordered yarn that I "hope" she will love. I just need for it to arrive soon!!! I plan on shopping this week for other goodies.

I guess that's all the knitting news I can think of for now. It's a GORGEOUS day so I think will head outside and take some knitting pictures!! I have some new goodies for show and tell and of course, the scarf. (It's no where near done, but it's a start)

Thanks for all your comments!!! I am definitely going to rip that out, and use the yarn for socks!!! Hopefully by the time I return from my trip to Washington, I will have a new box of "Socks That Rock"!! I did get a wonderful box of yarn from Cider Moon this week, although the weather has not been conducive to great photography so I will save that for later too!!!

The Argosy KAL is all set up and it will go "LIVE" when I come back. This will be fun. It is the first KAL I have ever hosted, so hopefully there will be more than just the pattern designer Vyvyan and myself participating!! Get out that DK weight yarn and your needles and give it a go!!! It will be fun, I promise!

OK, enough procrastinating on the computer, time to get my act together here. Hmmmm, four days away, how many projects should I pack??? :) LOL!!!! (I only have two!!!)

Now MY feeling on this is, while it is NOT ugly, it just doesn't scream "Wow, is that AWESOME". It kind of reminds me of the sea, which I love. I am definitely undecided. I think I will hold off on knitting any more, until my NEW color combos arrive!!!

OK, people. What is it about the Chevron Scarf from "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" that makes my brain hurt. I ordered the Socks that Rock from the good people at Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Great People, Great Yarn. I wound it in a ball, and commenced knitting. The pattern, love it. Small needles, love it. The yarn combo I chose, not so much. It's pretty but not "Oh My GOD, Where did you get that scarf" pretty!!!! I'll get a picture of it today.

So, back to the Blue Moon website and the Flickr group to search for inspiration. I sat so long, I felt like this:
Why is it so impossible for me to come up with the "perfect" color combo for this project. After all, it is only a scarf, not a fair isle sweater which I will have for the next 50 years and hopefully hand it down to some well meaning recipient who will continue to wear it for another 50. It is a SCARF!!!! Sigh...... It is my stubbornness to come up with a unique (ie. MINE) color combo.

So, I ordered MORE yarn. And (hanging head in shame), I "borrowed" some color combos. If I used your combo, I am sorry. I am desperate here. Chances are very slim that we will be in the same place at the same time. And if we are, I will give you FULL credit for the fabulous colors!!!

And for those of you who I interested, I am starting an Argosy KAL soon. Next week to be specific, after I return from my trip!! Anyone in??? More on that later........

The Best Compliment

Three NEW posts in one week?? Someone call the "Guinness Book of Records"!!! Well, that means I have spent way too much time focusing on knitting and not blogging on the "other" blog about personal stuffs and jewelry!!! Note to self: Get your jewelry rear in gear, bills to pay!!!

Anyway, I got the best compliment yesterday! I made a friend of mine some "ballband" dishcloths from the Mason Dixon book. Well, she remarked yesterday that since I gave them to her, she cannot use anything else and she just LOVES them!!!! That is the BEST compliment one can give a knitter!!!! Thanks Alice! Sometimes I wonder if the items I spend slaving over (granted I LIKE doing it but still...) ever get used. I just might have to make her some dish towels now!!!! :)

The Argosy is growing rapidly and I am plotting MORE for gifts. Perfect summer knitting!! It is going to be OVER 80 degrees today!!! (What is up with that???) The pollen is very heavy, and I have a migraine so it might be a winding yarn kinda day instead!!!

This is my "Argosy" scarf from Knitty!! I just love this pattern and why I have not done it sooner, heaven knows!!! And the specs in case you need to know:

Yarn: Rowan Calmer in Chiffon (a discontinued color) (I will probably use two skeins)
Needles: Clover Bamboo Size 6

Look at this!!! This is the hand painted yarn from Cider Moon!!! My very first order from them and it will NOT be my last!! This yarn is GORGEOUS!!!! It's buttery soft and the colors are to die for. They even included samples of the other yarns they offer. Enough to knit a few rows with to see how it is. What a nice touch!!!

Gillie's Denim Dog Sweater from "Doggy Knits". This is super cute with a little seed stitch border and collar. I am really enjoying knitting with Rowan Denim too!!

Tea Cozy from "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" in pumpkin colored Mission Falls 1824 Wool. My favorite washable wool of all time! It matches my kitchen PERFECTLY!!! I just have to sew this little bugger together, which is why it is NOT complete yet. I hate sewing!!! :)

The perfect knitting bag. Oh yah, I have been eyeing the Lexie Barnes and Namaste bags now for quite sometime. It was love at first site. Unfortunately, I have a TON of bags and would rather have MORE yarn, than a new bag. But I was checking out the new Vera Bradley collection that is a direct link to THE bag, in case you want one too!!) and found this:This is the outside, The large pocket in the bag can fit a paperback and wallet, because hey sometimes you feel like reading!!! And the straps are great over your shoulder.
Not too big, or too small!!!

This is the inside. I even got pictures of the works in progress for another post. (Hmmm maybe tomorrow) What you cant see is the three little pockets along the side. They are big enough for a skein of Rowan Denim to fit in. And on the other side, there is a large zippered pocket. I keep my pattern copies and extra needles) in there!

This is Lucy guarding my knitting. I don't think she could understand why I was taking a picture without her in it. She is a big ham!

Stash from Hell

You know your stash as grown to GIGANTIC proportions when your husband remarks about the two large boxes in the bedroom of yarn and says they look like they should be on a loading dock waiting to go on a freighter!!!! Naturally it didn't help matters when I casually remarked, "Oh that's just the wool". Meaning to him, the house is overrun with yarn. Um, yes, but I have hidden it so well, it doesn't look it. I will get a picture of "just the wool" as soon as I dust the bedroom and vacuum. I also collect pug hair...ha ha!!!

So, I have been trying to organize "the stash". It is overwhelming. So, in Fly Lady fashion, I am doing it bit by bit, 15 minutes at a time. I got all the cotton in one box, dishcloth cotton in another. Novelty yarns all together. So, why on earth do I buy novelty yarn, blech, but I have some, should the need for something totally frilly and useless arise.

I also got a copy of the latest Yarn Harlot book!!! I LOVE it!!! There is a section about stashes in there as well. I also ordered my VERY OWN copy of Barbara Walker's Treasury (Volume 1) because I checked it out of the library so often, I think they were starting to wonder about me. I consider that $30 well spent!!!

A New Swap!!

OK, I caved in. I just signed up for the "No Sheep For You Swap"!! I know, I know, I said no more swaps but I met my dear friend Hanane through one of these swaps and hopefully I can find another "friend in knit" to correspond with!!! This one requires no finished knitted items (which is good for me, since I can't seem to finish a thing these days!) Just two skeins of non wool yarn. Admittedly, I love wool, but I do love cottons, bamboo and silk, so this should be fun!!! The deadline is tomorrow, so it was do or die day, today. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!!!

I also did away with the KALS. The One Skein one was terrific during the swap but I never posted anymore and from the looks of it, I was not the only one!!! And the Mason Dixon one could not switch to the new blogger, so that one I had to give up, very sadly I might add. Hopefully, I will join some again soon, but with my lack of projects, it is kind of silly to join with nothing to post!

Since I am in the joining mood, any other good swaps out there????? I might do two this round!!! Hopefully this will boost up the knitting blog and make me finish some projects!!!!

Donde Estas???

Oh it has been way too long........so long in fact, that my "other" blog has almost 100 MORE posts!!!! Sigh...... I better get posting more frequently as my pattern in the Debbie Stoller Calendar goes into the bookstores soon and THIS blog is the one attached to the pattern. Wouldn't want people to think I was a "One Hit Wonder" now, would I???

So there has been knitting. No finishing, but definitely knitting. I am designing a lace scarf as we speak. I like how it is coming along, but I need to concentrate while knitting lace and since we are now in full blown allergy season, concentration is just not happening for me. So the lace, is based on a Barbara Walker Pattern (LOVE her books) and done with Sea Silk in the Paris colorway, just to tease you a bit!! Hopefully I can sit down and work on it this weekend!!!

I have also noticed a new trend going around. The "Chevron Scarf" from "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" made with Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock. I have wanted to use this yarn for some time now. The colors really do ROCK. In fact, I studied the color chart so long this week, my brain actually started to hurt! You need TWO contrasting colorways, and I cannot decide. After polling several of my friends, I think I have made a decision. Now I just need to make a purchase!

Let's see, what else am I making???? Mainly jewelry as it is getting to be my "busy season" with the art gallery!!! Which is good because that means MORE $$$ for yarn!!!!

Wow, have I been delinquent to the knitting blog or what???? I know!!! I have been knitting though, bits and pieces of things. But, let me tell you about the yarn SCORE I got recently.....

Let's see, Little Knits was having a sale on Sea Silk. If you do not have any, go get some, NOW!!!! It is shiny and fabulous. It is never on sale, that I have seen, so I got a skein (or two). Colorways are Paris and Glacier for those who care. Next, I went to the LYS for Rowan Kidsilk Haze. I decided to try the scarf portion of the scarf/shawl/wrap combo from "Alterknits ". I love it but it needs the kidsilk, no doubt about it. I tried it without but the kidsilk makes it all soft and heavenly looking. I will be making the entire thing in cream later on, I just had enough yarn for the scarf. And while I was there (because you didn't think I ran in there got 2 skeins of kidsilk and left, did you??) I got Rowan denim for 40% off!! 40%%!!! After the EMTs resuscitated me, I got the bag! And two skeins of Lorna's Laces bulky for 40% off too!!!!

On the knitting front, it is a sad state of affairs around these parts. I cannot seem to finish a project no matter how hard I try. So, in lieu of updates, I decided to post this question.

Where can I donate yarn????

I have been up in my attic deciding to get rid of all the stuff I have up there. Beanie Babies, suitcases I will no longer need, clothing that well, (gulp) no longer fits..... you name it, it is there. Anyway, I have oodles of yarn, mostly Lion Brand from when I was knitting for the sailors via "Ships Support". I did find one nice charity but they only take wool. This is acrylic or mostly acrylic. If anyone has any good charities with websites, leave a comment or you can private message me as well!!! Thanks!!!

Cactus anyone???

Guess what?? I found out I can offer my cactus pattern to you here, on my blog!!! Let me spruce up the pattern a bit by adding a photo or two and then I will publish it under the "Patterns and Freebies" section to the right!!! :) If anyone is interested in making one, please send me a picture of your finished cactus for a gallery (include your name and blog or web address too and I'll gladly post that as well!!)

Also, I was thinking of hosting a KAL for this. They are so much fun to make, super quick and best of all, do not need watering or any care aside from an occasional dusting!!! I'm also planning on creating MORE cactus patterns soon!!

My "continental" knitting is coming along and the tension is finally evening out. I have been practicing making MDK baby bibs for my friend's new grand baby!! (I'll be sure to get a few pictures before I give them to her!!)

Purling: The Knit Stitch's Evil Twin

Last night, even though I have an "emergency" baby git to make, I decided I needed to practice my "Continental" knitting. I have always wanted to learn this way, the faster, more efficient method of knitting. I got the knit stitch some time ago, but needed to work on evening out the tension. Surprisingly, after not knitting this way, I picked it up and it actually felt comfortable, familiar. So this morning, come hell or high water, I was going to conquer the purl stitch, continental style. I had flashbacks to when I was small, sitting at my mother's kitchen table, the plastic needles and acrylic yarn in hand, while she not so patiently taught me to purl. Telling me it was simply, knitting backwards. HA!!

I cannot believe I actually "got it". Yay!!! I am on my way to knitting "Continental". Since it is a nice day out today....50's and sunny, I might have to go outside and practice!!!!

Classic Mittens

Well, here they are, my "Classic Mittens". I really love this pattern, simple, and yet they fit exceptionally well. Pardom the picture, as I have just shovelled the driveway in them and they were a bit, well, very damp!!!

The Pattern: An old 1960's leaflet purchased by my mother. Cost of the pattern in 1960 - 50 cents....amazing!!!

The Yarn: None other than Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in the Buck's Bar colorway.

The Time: One weekend.

My Pattern Got Published!!!

Guess what??? I've been published!!! I now have a pattern in the "Stitch n' Bitch" calendar by Debbie Stoller!!! It's been in the "works" for awhile now, but I just got the "check" which means it's official and I can announce it.

Well, what is it??? A knitted cactus. A knitted "Barrel" cactus inspired by my many trips (and dream of living in the desert) to Arizona. Let's face it, I cannot grow a damn thing. I have a "prayer plant" that manages to live only because they need very little maintenance besides water, and a bamboo plant because all that needs is water. So I figured, why not knit myself a plant. It was one of those "fluke" ideas that actually worked. I think I made it in an afternoon. It's easy, it's felted and (ahem) in MY opinion, super cute.

I "might" be able to offer the pattern here, but I need to check out this fact in case YOU want to make one too!!!

Ok, I know I've been promising pictures and here they are! I know, try not to fall off your chair.

First, we have the Irish Hiking Wristlets. Everyone loves the Hiking Scarf pattern, including me! The yarn on these was Knitpicks Wool of the Andes. I like the yarn, but I would not make them again in it, due to the "washiblity" factor, especially if these are given as a gift. Not everyone follows washing and drying directions and these could end up rather felted and tiny!! The model is my friend Holly who scoffed these up on her latest visit to my studio!!!

Next, the "Fabulous Fetching" Wristlets. I ADORE this pattern. These I had finished quite some time ago, but did not want to post them as they were a birthday gift for a friend who just happens to read my blog! I didn't want to spoil the surprise!! The yarn on this was one of my favorite wools of all time, Mission Falls 1824. I have two more sets of these on the needles as we speak!

And finally, my new box of roving. It arrived the day I started to get the flu, so I opened it, admired it and it is still sitting in the studio. I have looked over the books I ordered on spinning from the library, and the one I got at Barnes and Noble, so maybe next week I can give it a "whorl"...ha!!! The Corriedale purple is so soft and the most gorgeous color. Everything came from Hello Yarn.

Happy Valentine's Day dear blog readers. It's been awhile since I have posted and honestly, I have been very, very sick from the latest "stomach virus du jour". Spinning Is My New Hobby!!

OK, I'm horrible about pictures. I have taken some, but they are in the camera. I know, great place for them. I need to start one of those "Fliker" albums or something!! But, I just had to fill you in.

I ORDERED ROVING AND A DROP SPINDLE. I am weak, I have admitted that before. It sure didn't take long. Sunday morning I was waiting for a friend to stop over to go shopping and out to lunch and I had time to kill. So I ordered. I could have uploaded photos, or even did some sit ups....but no, I bought roving. Then I figured I would pick up a spinning book at good ol B&N. So my fate is sealed, I am about to become a spinner!!!

Also, I realized that I cannot knit on needles bigger than a size 11. I think I have said this before too. I started the "Fillipi Scarf" from "One Skein Wonders" (which is one terrific book) and promptly ripped it out (sorry everyone, I hate the term "frogging or frog pond". ew.) It called for a 13. I couldn't. I tried the 11 and it was a bit thin for my tastes. Hmm.... maybe the same pattern, more stitches, in a smaller gauge yarn. Aha!!! That's it!!! The pattern is super cute. It would be a shame not to make one!!!

I don't even know if anyone reads this, but do you want me to do a "6 Weird Things About Me" like everyone who blogs seems to be doing. Leave a comment. I would like to know if someone is out there!!! And just because I need to say it.....pictures soon!!! :)

The Yarn Binge

It's finally official, the yarn diet has turned into a yarn binge. You knew that would happen, right?? Well, I went to San Antonio recently (hence the complete lack of posting on the knitting blog...sigh). And I went yarn shopping with my good friend Donna. We decided to make a day of yarn shopping going to the only two shops in the area, but they were great shops!!!

First we went to the "Yarn Barn" on McCullough. This was a great shop. My friend knows the owner so we had a nice conversation with her while she showed us all the new stuff. She had these really cool "jelly" bags with a special yarn pocket and a nice "grommetted" hole coming out the side for your working yarn. Nice. Also, she had the BEST selection of needles I had ever seen. Every brand in every size!!!! I wish I lived closer!!!

So, then we hit "Sonic". OK, Sonic is a big deal to me because we just don't have them in MA. Too cold and icy I guess. Actually, I am glad we don't have them, because I probably would be there every day!!!

Next stop, "Yarnivore". This little shop in a strip mall was great!! The two owners are military wives, who happen to be from my neck of the woods!!! They had a nice selection and I managed to purchase a few skeins. Namely a wonderful bamboo in a gorgeous navy shade, and some angora in purple. I have no plans for these, but I love the colors. BUT, the big thing was the rovings. Now, I am NOT a spinner, at least not yet!!! :) Well, come to find out, Donna had purchased a drop spindle recently and I helped her pick out rovings. All I can say is one touch of the raw silk and I was sold. You know where this is going, right??

Did I buy spinning supplies? No. I did however order some spinning books form the library to do a wee bit of light reading before going all gung-ho and purchasing. After all, the attic does not need any more craft stuff up there!!!

I surrender. I bought yarn. I am hopeless. It's been 21 days......not too shabby, right??? **grin** OK, you want to hear the story??? Well, I needed size 0 and 1 dpns. (yes, I plan on knitting socks...I know, I know somethign I said I would never do.) NO PLACE NEAR ME CARRIED SMALL NEEDLES. OK, no places with yarn I would be tempted to increase the stash size with. They are "safe places" for me to be. WalMart, AC Moore, Michael's and JoAnn Fabric all batted 0. I found 2's...but nothing smaller. Instead of going to the LYS (of which there are several near me, and since I am weak, and it would be like taking a chocoholic into a sweet shop), I opted for The Fabric Place. OK, the yarn selection there is a good one, I will give them that. BUT they had several brands of dpns to choose from and I knew it so.......

I bought. How could I not?? Surrounded by fiber, and oh the colors!! Along with my needle selection, a lone skein of Noro Silk Garden "fell into my bag". ::wink wink:: I plan on making these with it.

And yes, this week I will get photos of my finished objects (namely the fingerless mitts) so you will have something to look at while I jet off to San Antonio TX while Mark is at a meeting. And I will be knitting the entire time!!

Please do not continue to come up with new and exciting yarns for me to try. Just do not report to your desk any longer. Your services are no longer required!!!! OK, this morning I check my emails and lo and behold a newsletter from the fine gals at kpixie. If you have not been there, go now. It's a great site with awesome yarns. Lots of indie stuff. Love it!! Well, it turns out that SWTC now makes a yarn called Tofutsies. Cute huh?? No, it's made from crab shells and it's for socks. Great colors too. I want some. No I need some. it is far too tempting because as a vegetarian, I could really use some yarn with tofu in the title, don't you think??? MUST RESIST THE URGE TO BUY. This could take all the will power I have people. All of it.

Warshrag A Go-Go

I completely forgot to show you my "Ball Band" dishcloths (or "warshrags") from Mason Dixon Knitting. I got so excited over this pattern, I just couldn't stop!!! I liked knitting them so much, I joined the Monthly Dishcloth KAL too!!!! I packaged them in sets of two, included a kitchen soap from Bath and Body Works in a color to match, and a fancy gift bag!!! They were very well recieved!!!

I called this duo "Desert". I loved the sage green color.
I need to work with this color more!!!

This one I named "happy" because pink and orange make me feel happy inside!!!

I did make a few for me as well, but they are "in service" at the moment!! And if you 'fly" on the "Fly Lady" program, these are perfect for shining your sink!!!

As promised, I am updating again. This time with a picture of an actual FINISHED OBJECT!!!! I really love these cupcakes!! They are adorable and fun to make. Here's the plan. I made one, just to see if they are as cute in person as in the pattern book. The answer is yes, take a look.

So, now I am going to make them for my friend's birthdays. No, I am not giving them just a knitted cupcake which my DH Mark keeps asking me why anyone would even want one. He fails to submit to their cuteness. (sigh) My gift idea includes a cupcake in a bakery box with a happy birthday ribbon and tag and a gift card to their favorite coffee place and/or bakery. Cute, huh???

I actually have been knitting like my fingers are on fire but I have NO PICTURES to show. I need to get a photo shoot going of my finished items as well as the progression of some. And I have found the PERFECT mitten pattern. Actually it belongs to my mother who paid a whopping 40 cents for the BOOK of patterns sometime in the 60's I'd guess. Well, I know have my own copy and got out the Lorna's Laces worsted, my dpns and went to town. But wait, I must have giant hands because my mittens did not fit my extra large mitts!!! So, the lone mitt will get match and they will get gifted to a lucky recipient. I will say this, I am still in love with
the Lorna's Laces yarn.

The Siren's Song

Ah, it's the new year.......a time to freshen up this knitting blog. During the "break" I have been knitting. My strong aversion to dpn's has now turned into LOVE, that's right LOVE. And with that, the siren's song of socks is calling. Shhh....listen. You can just hear it. Surprisingly (said tongue in cheek) I DO have sock yarn in my stash. How?? Why??? Did I know I would pick up dpn's again....yes I guess I did. Now I need the perfect pattern. I don't like socks, and as a matter of fact, wear them VERY infrequently. And you know what, my feet will NEVER win a beauty contest, but I don't care, there is something very free about goign barefoot. (I studied ballet for many years, and despite what the manufacturer's say about "their" toe shoes, they WILL deform your feet!!)

Now, pictures...... I have plenty of new knitted items but still no pictures. I guess i have an aversion to photography. My knitted items do not photograph as well as my jewelry does. I need to work on this. If the sun ever makes an apperance today, I will try to get some pictures.

Ok, my NY's resolution is to update this blog more frequently and starting THIS week, you are guaranteed at least TWO new tales of knitty goodness per week. (Unless I am away, and then you will hear all about it when I return ~ nothing like knitting on the road!!) And I intend on fixing up my "side board" too...... does anyone know how to add those cute little bar graphs for your projects???

For those of you who read my seriously pathetic little knititng blog, you are probably wondering, hey, where'd she go?? Did she abandon knitting??? Nope, I'm here. Battling bronchitis, holidays and other assorted treasures of the season. I say "treasures" a tad sarcastically because anyone who knows me, KNOWS that I HATE this time of year. Long story and I will save you from reading a long rant and uttering "Scrooge" under your breath. Save it.

But why didn't anyone tell me that the "Fetching" fingerless gloves from Knitty were so damn addictive!!! No seriously. I had a wee bit of time on my hands lately and broke out the dpns and went to town. By me saying I got out the dpns you know I was in serious need of somethign to do. I never cared for knitting with dpns and avoided them like the plague....until now. Actually I have alot on my knitting bag lately, which I will get pictures of in the new year (oh that old tune again...)....but I keep thinking about finishing those gloves. I finished one, and usually, that ends the story. It sits, in a ziploc, nestled with the remaining yarn and a promise to return and finish it's mate. Not this time people. I couldn't wait to start (and finish) and I'm almost done too...and secretly planning on making more....... MUST MAKE MORE!!! I am addicted to this pattern!!!

Ok, go enjoy the holiday, stress all out and complain. I'm here...knitting....and happy!!!

Echoes......

Heeeeellllllloooo.......do I hear an echo in here?? Bueller???? Bueller??? (remember that movie??) I know, what can I say.......the design studio has been exceptionally busy and you don't here me complaining....but it has left a void in the knitting department. I did manage to knit some presents but other than that, knitting has taken a back seat these days!! I have been trying to knit in between life....... the sick dog, the shopping, the cooking, the designing, packaging and mailing (remember I am a one woman show here)........

So, I'm just dropping by to say that I will be blogging more, and by more I mean at least TWICE a week on the knitting blog in the new year!!! I will be back with new patterns, stuff, resolutions (because it just isn't new year's without them!!)

Long time, no knit!!

I know, I know, it has been a long time. I have been knitting......and there will be pictures but not with this weather. It has been horrible since I have returned from my trip. No seriously the rain and cloudy days are getting to me. What happened to those crisp fall days out on the deck in a comfy sweater knitting in the sunshine. And to top it off, it is WARM....almost 70!!! (Oh, I am in New England not Texas!!)

So, knitting, what, when and why????

I have been making the Sugar on Snow from Knitty like mad!! I have three done , all in Lorna's Laces wonderful colorways!! They are for gifts....not if I can just add some matching earrings they will be ready to go!!

Bath mitts. Does anyone else get the Martha Stewart Holiday magazine. Worht the $7 or whatever the cost!! Typically I am NOT a fan, but this issue might turn me into a Martha groupie!! It does have some knitting content in it too, BUT there is a recipe for bath fizzies in it, that when paired with a bath mitt, make a wonderful gift!!!

And finally, the "Ball Band" dishcloths from MDK!! I LOVE making them and decided to make a few. Again, a nice gift when paired with some nice kitchen soap (Bath and Body Works or Williams Sonoma) all in a cute basket!!!

I also joined the Monthly Dishcloth KnitAlong!!! What a fun group!! I even found a super pattern that I am going to make a BIG bunch of for a friend who just moved into a new house! Oh I am terrible.....I am not saying what or who because she "might" read this and I really want this to be a surprise!!!!

So there you have it. If it ever stops raining I will get some pictures........or I will be on the news, floating in a row boat down my street....... knitting..........

Ok, I'll admit it, my favorite things to knit these days are accessories. I know, not the most challenging of items unless you are knitting gloves, with the fingers...... but I love 'em. Quick projects are like the instant gratification you get while going through a drive thru.... "I'd like a hat, and two scarves, please"...."drive up to the window"...... :) (Can you tell I've been through a drive thur or two in my time????) And I do NOT knit socks...that's a whole new obession that I'd rather not take on. Sock knitting has come so far these days but I refuse to get lured in by some pretty yarn and hand dyes...... I refuse.

So, we're leaving again for a meeting for Mark. Which means I will be sightseeing, absorbing local color (say it like Ricky Ricardo), and hopefully knitting. I have four, count 'em F-O-U-R balls of Lorna's Laces Worsted and a goal......make as many "Sugar on Snow" neck gaiters, cowls, or warmers (whatever you call them) as fast as I can. Did you know there is only 52 days left until Christmas....FIFTY TWO people!!!!!! So, this is going to be my gift this year........... If I spoiled your gift for you this year.......well, deal with it. I'm hooked on these darn things and I will knit them until I cannot see straight. I am waiting for some beads I ordered from a lampworking friend to arrive so I can make coordinating jewelry....there I've gone and spoiled the ENTIRE gift!!!! I will be back on Wednesday with pictures......and knitted items...... and maybe a story or two......

......to a Christmas tree near you!!!! Will it be YOUR tree???? Today, I finally got around to taking a picture of the "Sugar on Snow" knitted neck cowl or warmer from KNITTY!!! For those of you who want the specs.....the yarn is Lorna's Laces Worsted in "Motherlode" (and yes I did gauge it because the original was made with two strands of DK from Knitpicks) and the needles were #9 16" circulars like the pattern required. I did do the icord on #7s for the record, and skipped the leaves on it. Ok, my "plan" was to add these big holed silver beads I have BUT the cord was too thick. I will make another with a smaller cord and we will see what happens!!!

So that's it.....Thanks Lynnea for lighting a fire under my butt and making me get out and take the picture!!! I'm currently designing a little felted ipod "cozy" with BEADS!!!! And I will take a picture soon. I'm headin' out of town (again!!) on Saturday and I'm winding up more Lorna's Laces to make neck cowls with so you just might be the lucky recipient of one this holiday season!!! :)

Oh yah, it's been a week..... and YES, I have been knitting and beading and the creative juices are back on track. Sorry for the lack of posting...... I will try to do better (hanging head in shame)!!!

Today, I finally got around to posting my baby bibs!!! I just love them...aren't they sweet???? I crocheted a simple ruffle on the botton to make them extra "girlie". I even found some cute buttons in my button box!!! I plan on making more of these...they are totally easy, and require no concentration. Then I will not have to hurry when I need a baby gift...smart thinkin' huh???

I will have MORE pictures this week. I just finished "Sugar on Snow" from Knitty. It is adorable...kudos to the designer!!! They make nice gifts too..... :) I just need to find some embellishment for the icord and I'll take a picture (or two)!!!!!

The muse and the mojo are back in sync again...ahhhhh....and I am working my way throught he Mason Dixon baby bibs!!! Admittedly, while boring and ultra simple, they are PERFECT for getting the creative juices flowing again and addictive little suckers to say the least. For my sample, I crocheted a wee edge along the border...cute. I will take pictures when I am done. I think they will be sweet, done up in ribbons in a little basket......(I'll take a picture)

And I am weak to the call of fiber.....I don't know what it is, the touch, the smell, the compulsive need to purchase things..I dunno. But I was catching up on my blog reading and saw the Mason Dixon blog today and the GLORIOUS scarf made with sea silk. Oh yah, I MUST have some. I have been dying to try out this yarn.....and decided I will buy TODAY, NOW, IMMEDIATELY. I did some searchin' and found a woman in Maine who sells the pattern and the yarn on ebay. With PRIORITY mail shipping because (ahem) I need it NOW. And I started thinking I don't live all THAT far from Maine (about 4 hours) so I could drive up there...ok, I am ahead of myself now, I don't need it THAT BADLY!!! I must finish the baby bibs first....yes, I must! Ok, so it is on it's way.......woo hoo.........And it is lace weight and you know what that means....lots of knitting, on one single skein....love those little needles. That is how I learned to knit, so I prefer tiny needles over the BIG honkin' ones (which to me is ANYTHING bigger than size 11). (And I'll take a picture)

Well, that's about it. I think I should make some supper.........or else Mark will come home to a kitchen table full of yarn, as opposed to a kitchen table full of food. I think he prefers the latter......

I'm back from my Seattle trip, and might have some baby bibs to show, but I just wanted to say thank you to Holly of HollYarn for the terrific package for the Knitter's Tea Swap 2!!!! Thanks girl!!! I did take pictures and will post them here and on the site when I get my act together!!!! I love everything!! :)

I didn't knit much in Seattle or visit one yarn shop (perish the thought!!) because my tour guide and host had me busy from sun up to sun down!! I literally fell into bed every night exhausted!!! I had a blast!! I will be posting pictures on the regular blog sometime this week, like I said, when I get my act together here!!!

Back To The Basics

Oh yah, you've all been sitting there in anticipation waitng to see all the knitting that was finished on my Nantucket getaway......well....sorry, there is none. What?? How could this be????? Well, I think I have the knitter's version of ADD. (and I am not making light of people who have this condition, not at all) I cannot concentrate on knitting. I started a new Branching Out, ripped it out twice. Blamed the yarn. (Knitpicks Elegance) Which I am not longer going to buy. I do have a FULL bag of it in "fog" (hey kinda like my mind) for a shawl....which will be in the bag for another decade or so!!! I think the yarn hs gone downhill in quality, my humble opinion only here.....anyone else agree??

Ok, true to my knitting roots, and extra project was packed.....less a stitch marker, but a paperclip pitch hitted for that......almost done and somehow, the eyelet row combined with my complete lack of coordination messed it up. I ripped it out, figuring I would knit on the boat but some serious wave action from a storm prevented that. I figured the pitch and roll of the ferry combined with the motion of the knitting equaled disaster.....so I listened to Elton John's new album instead!

So I am back to basics. Let's get the mojo flowing again! I pulled out all the Sugar and Cream stock I had, selected some colors, and went to work on some baby bibs (from Mason Dixon) for someone in Mark's office who is expecting their first grandchild. And apparently, is not letting anyone in the office forget this fact, so gifts will be needed!!! I'll make those and some burb rags (babies are messy!!) and put them in a sweet little basket. Cute and functional. Ok, after spending the past year devoted to cables and more complex items...this is ::yawn:: boring, but the mojo is flowing!!!!

Ok, I am hanging my head in shame.....there has been NO KNITTING at all. I read other people's blogs and they are knitting fabulous items, and me?? NOT ONE BLOODY THING!!!! This has been a crazy month to say the least.......and the ONLY time I got to knit was on the plane...excuses, excuses. I know, if you love it, you will find time. I do, but there is no time! Honestly.........

My stash has exploded all over my spare room, so I am thinking yarn, but getting it on the needles is another thing. Emails are piling up, no new jewelry either...what is wrong with me???? So if you come here looking for knitting, you ain't gonna find it, not now at least!!!

I need to get motivated. Anyone?? Send me your motivational help......hey, maybe that would be a topic for a good new book....."Motivational Help For Knitters In Distress". What do you do to get motivated????

Ok, now that I have completely told the world how LAME I am......I am making up my Knitter's Tea Swap package!!! See??? I am thinking knitting!!!I love what I am sending, hopefully my "pal" will too!!! I will take a picture before I send it. All the contents are in the box, now I just need to wrap up the items for a nice presentation, and seal it up and away we go!!! I did have to go to Trader Joe's and pick up some dark chocolate. I bought milk, but she prefers dark. Believe me, it will not be wasted!!! I LOVE the milk stuff....dark not so much so I will have a little stash for myself!!! :)

Maybe that will motivate me.......

Knit Happens, or NOT!

Ok, so I am not a "frequent poster" on this blog!! If you want to see what I am really up to, feel free to pop over to my "main" blog, The West End Designs Journal. Truthfully, the knitting took a back seat this weekend to family obligations, so there is no news. But don't they say no news is good news?? Hopefully this week, I will be able to show some FINISHED projects....although doubtful. But I do hope to find time to knit a bit, at least. Well, there is LOTS of reality tv, and knitting during the program makes me feel like I am not wasting my time, not to mention brain cells, watching trashy tv!!

I am having fun with the new swap! It's about knitting and tea, two things I love dearly!! I have corresponded with my secret pal AND the person I have to spoil with a package is so nice. She lives in Singapore!! I can't wait to put her package together. I hope she likes what I have planned!!! I am going witht a theme...Nantucket, since I will be going there next week! She will be getting a wee taste of New England in a box!!! Hopefully I can get that into the mail THIS week, even though the deadline is October 15th. I have so much to do this month!!

Hi Knitting Friends.....

This is my pug Lucy, and a scarf from the ONE Skein book that I started yesterday. Ok, I am planning on giving these as a gift, so I need YOUR opinion. There will be two, one in this camel color and one in blue. I need to finish them asap. BUT, while I like the pattern, I am starting to wonder if it is too skinny for a man. The pattern wwas modeled on men, but I can't decide. The colors are "manish" but do men really wear skinny scarves???? I don't know. Mark doesn't like scarves at all, so what's a girl to do??? Turn to her knitting buddies, that's what! Feel free to leave me a comment or a PM (private message) as to your thoughts.

Oh, in case you want to know, it is Plymouth Yarns, Indiecta Brand Suri Merino (55% Suri Alpaca and 45% Extra Fine Merino) It's like butter...so soft and warm..I love it. I do have some pink and peach for ME!! (ok, well maybe a gift). And it's not too expensive either. I'm not sure if I would like an entire sweater with it, but I'm not sure......

I did it!! I joined the "Destash - Cash for your Stash" blog!! And last night I posted my first item, YARN!! Go over and check it out. Email me if you are interested!!! I have tons more that I plan on posting!!! Between that, and some of the jewelry making supplies I have posted on my own journal page, I hope to make a few $$ for new stuff!!! Out with the old, and in with the NEW!! :) That's my new motto!!!

Well, I haven't been doing much in the way of knitting!! I just got a heapin' helpin' of pearls from Thailand and am working on some new designs. I also need to get crackin' and work on my NEW blog that my friend, Hanane and I are starting...... So much to do, so little time. I think they should add some extra hours in the day especially for the arts......I sure could use it!!

Where have I been???

Oh yah, it's been a week, and I guess it is about time that update my neglected little knitting blog!!! (for more regular updates, you can read my Journal here!!)I did knit on the plane.....but my problem was I kept knitting the same row over and over and over......5 hours and I didn't get much accomplished!! So all I finished was ONE of the fingerless mitts. The plane ride home was a bit better and I started on the second! I do love them and Koigu is my NEW favorite yarn....it knits like a dream and has wonderful stitch definition. My friend loved the idea of the fingerless mitt, so I plan on making some for her for a gift!!

So here it is, the "Lone Mitt"!!!
(I'll model them for you once I sew them up!!)

Let's see, Friday night I roped my husband into stopping at the "Fabric Place" which stocks some nice yarn (the employees leave alot to be desired, but since I really didn't need help or advice, it was ok) ...let's just say the bribe was it is near a BBQ place he likes, so since it is so close ::wink::....why not??? I picked up some yarn for her gloves, some cotton, and some gloriously soft alpaca!!! So much yarn, so little time.......

Before I leave. I'm only going for three days and I have, in typical knitter's fashion, packed more yarn than clothing!! :) But, I thought I would leave you with something to look at while I'm gone....so here ya go!!!!

First, I needed a way to find my Thread Cutter (airline approved!) by Clover! I love this thing!! A very handy gadget but hard to find in the knitting bag.....so I knotted a "fob" for it out of hand dyed silk cord by Deepwood Art and silver beads!!

Here is a close up of those knots!! I think they came out really good!!!

Next is my present for a dear friend of mine who I will be visiting! She loves green and I thought the "One Skein" Clutch would be perfect! I might post a picture of it over on that blog too!! I am pleased with the results...I hope she is too!

And finally, a close up of the knitted flower and bead center! The bead matches the bag perfectly.....it is darker than the picture actually shows!! I love these bags and am going to be making more for gifts!!

I did it again....I know, I said I am not a joiner and I will not do swaps again, but this one looked like so much fun!!! And truthfully, I have met a couple of very good friends doing these, so why not??? I have TONS of yarn in my stash......and I love tea, and could always use another friend in knit, so here we go again!!! :)

Still no knitting lately!! But I found two skeins of Knitpicks "Elegance" in my stash that is just screaming to be made into a "Branching Out" scarf....and I put all the beads on the skein of KPPM for the gloves...I'm ready to fly!! I just have a few more things to gather together, like clothes and shoes (yeah, I think I will need those!!) and some cash for bead shopping and I'm good to go!!!

I'll try to get some pictures of stuff over the weekend so you will have something to look at!! Oh, and I scrubbed the baby kimono....it's been too long now and I have forgetten where I am and honestly, I'm not crzy about my choice of cotton, so rrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiippppppppppp. There it goes!!!!

Hello dear knitting friends......I'm here....barely!! You can always pop over to my other blog for more frequent updates if you are missing what is going on in my life but, if you're here for knitting...well........

So, where have I been?/ No place...yet.....I'm getting ready for a quick trip, business for my husband, but since we're not paying, I'm going too!!! I'm packing knitting for my flights and time alone in the hotel, so I am winding skeins, copying patterns, finding needles......you know......not knitting!!! Making sure I have a project and a backup because no one wants to get stuck with no knitting, right??? Hmm...speaking of stuff to do, I should find a book too, just in case!!! :)

Sorry for the complete lack of knitting news.....I'll have some soon!!

Two poles and some dental floss.....

I've never been a person who likes knitting with BIG needles. To me, they are like knitting dental floss with two telephone poles! Any thing bigger than a size 10 needles and I wave the white flag of surrender!! I don't mean to insult anyone here, they're just not my thing. I know many who love those #13's and can make a sweater in an afternoon, I'm just not one of those. Well, I am invited to be a guest in my friend's home in Seattle next month. And like mothers always tell you, never go to someone's house empty handed! I thought the perfect gift is something handmade! I saw this basic throw called "Dreamy" on the Knitpicks site and thought why not?? The yarn looks nice and soft and it will be light, yet warm. I chose a color, placed the order, and......

Well, it's made on a #19 telephone pole (oops, I mean knitting needle)!!! I sat down this adternoon to South Pacific in concert with my favorite Broadway singer of all time (Brian Stokes Mitchell) and decided I have a month to make this throw, let's get the show on the road! And, I'm not sure....casting on was a chore, and not that it's any complicated pattern, garter stitch all rows (yawn) , I can't tell if I like it. It's furry and lacey and I just don't know.

I have decided to work on it this evening and after getting a hunk done, then decide. I will snap a picture tomorrow so you can see it, but, I don't know.......

Maybe matching cabled mufflers might be better???? I think I'll start cooking supper, and then decide.

*****Later that afternoon.......it wasn't getting any better.....and when Mark came home, he said "what is THAT" and when I told him a blanket, he made a face and said that isn't very nice......and that is EXACTLY what I was thinking...... so the project has been scrubbed. The yarn is in a box waiting to be returned and I will NEVER knit with SURI DREAM FROM KNITPICKS again. I could have gotten better yarn at AC Moore!!! This was definitely a case of you get what you pay for!!!....Lesson learned! Now I need another idea for a gift..hmmm......

Well, I guess it's been a busy week, huh?? No new knitting posts!!! BUT, I have been knitting. I am making great strides on both the cozy and Branching Out. I have to say, for YEARS I never wanted to knit lace but now I LOVE it!!! I am planning on making many more lace scarves. They make the perfect gifts because many of my friends live in warm climates, and their so portable!!!

This weekend, I need to start two more projects though, a clutch from one skein (which has become my favorite gift to give!) and a blanket for my friend. the blanket is that pattern from KnitPicks and the yarn is Suri Dream. I chose a blue color, and hopefully it will be perfect! And the clutch, well, it is for my friend in AZ who I will be visiting in a few weeks!!! Yay!!! I chose a soft green, because green is her favorite color! I should at least get that finished!!! I'll take pictures when I start the projects!!!

Ok, so you've heard me talking about this "Cozy Shawl" that I've been knitting, here it is!! Now bear in mind, I took these pictures on FRIDAY (yes, I am truely terrible about uploading them!) and I am into my second skein of yarn! :) I bought 4 skeins of sport weight but actually think it will take three.....or I'm hoping it will take three because the yarn would make a terrific "Branching Out" scarf! It is beautiful and very fun to knit. I know, it wasn't fun in the beginning......but I LOVE the pattern now! I even got a "close up" for you!!! The colorway did not photgraph as pretty as it is in person!! Hopefully my finished garment will show off the subtle colors!!! I am even making a matching bracelet for it!!

Row Counter Tutorial

Happy Beading!!

Supplies:
1 medium size toggle
4 2X2 " crimps
1 3X3" crimps
1 fancy lampwork bead (bead shown by Melanie Egan)
10 large glass based pearls (8 mm)
15 small glass based pearls (6mm)
4" of elastic beading cord
2 9" pieces of colored beading wire .019" (wire shown from Fire Mountain Gems)
(remember wire will be exposed, colored wire is nicer for this project)
Assorted accent beads and spacers
Wire cutters, Scissors and Crimping Tool

Step 1: Insert BOTH strands of beading wire through toggle and 2X2 crimp bead. Fold over leaving room for toggle to move freely and insert back through the crimp bead forming a loop. Crimp bead - do not trim excess wire at crimp!

Step 2: Add accent beads and lampwork, covering excess wire with beads.

Step 3: Add second 2X2 crimp bead and crimp flush with beads.

Step 4: On one wire, add 9 of the small pearls and on the other wire add 10 of the large pearls.

Step 5: Make Marker. Thread 5 6mm pearls on elastic cord. Thread 3X3 crimp through BOTH ends as shown. Pull tightly, forming a circle and crimp. Trim off excess cording at crimp.

Step 6: Thread marker over BOTH wires.

Step 7: Measure 5 1/2" (for average wrist) from second crimp bead. Add another 2X2" crimp bead at 51/2" mark and crimp.

Step 8: Add additional accent beads and remaining pearl and final crimp onto BOTH strands of wire.

Step 9: Loop beading wire and toggle bar through the crimp and accent beads as shown. Crimp and trim access wire! YOU ARE FINISHED!

To use: For each row you knit, move one of the small beads through the marker. When all 9 beads are on the other side of the marker, move one of the BIG beads through the marker and move the 9 small beads back to the start. Repeat...... will count up to 100 rows!!! this would be very handy for travel! You can keep track of your knitting and still wear a pretty bracelet at the same time!

Today's post is for my new Secret Pal, Hanane! She told me I needed more pictures on my blog!!! And she was so right!!! And today, I will get pictures of the other things I am working on for the next update!! I will try to add at least one or two pictures a week!! Let's keep things interesting!

It is made with the bamboo yarn for Southwestern Trading Comapny and was gifted to me by my One Skein Secret pal, Lynnea!

And this is my One Skein Secret Pal's final project for me!! An awesome felted box for my desk!! It has found a home on the computer table with my file cards and notes in it!! And as you can see it matches my walls PERFECTLY!!!

And the last picture for today is my One Skein Pal's final package which consisted of not only the finsihed project....but also a birthday gift for me!! In the box is a chocolate bar, notecards with my inital and some badger balm (for those rough knitter's hands!! :) ) Clotted cream and lemon curd for my morning scones and dog cookies for the girls!! A pug puzzle, a cute purse pattern WITH the yarn and Nicky Epstien's new book of knitted flowers!! Wow, a very generous present indeed!!

Ok, I decided before I get settled outside on the back deck for an afternoon of knitting, I should update this blog! It's hard...I have lots of blogs and I need a bloggin schedule desperately! I need a studio schedule too!! Maybe it's time to "FlyLady" my studio and computer time!!

So today I decide I **need** to go to the LYS...well not so "L" but YS. I had a hankering for yarn and I needed to actually shop!!! And besides, I had an idea of yarn for my new Secret Pal (who is a super person BTW!!) and I needed a skein of Lamb's Pride bulky weight because I want to make a clutch for a friend who I will be visiting in a few weeks. Well, I didn't need that much incentive. Just say "yarn" and I'm there!!! Well, THEY WERE HAVING A SALE!! So, if you live in So. Eastern MA, go to the Wool Basket in Duxbury! There is some really nice yarn on sale!!

And let's talk about yesterday's "almost" crisis!!! I am about 10 pattern rows into "Branching Out" so, translated I am almost half way done. I put it down for a few weeks (to work and go on a trip) so yesterday, I decided to pick it back up again. I need to finish it so I can make another for a gift......well, I made very good notes on the pattern as to where I left off. Now typically I do a complete pattern before ending something for the day/night/week. It's easier to remember. Long story short, I didn't,and ignored my notes and started at the beginnning anyway! I made a MESS!!! I tried once to put it back on the needles, and that was a no go. But, I decided one more try and if not, I (gulp) start over!! I managed to salvage it and only lost 4 rows!! I do have a picture of it and I will post it next time!!! I do take pictures, I just have a hard time posting...as you know!! :)

Well, it's such a nice day, I'm not going to spend it inside! I'm taking the dogs and my knitting and heading out into the backyard..........

Where Have I Been???

And the prodigal blogger returns.....I have not been ignoring you, honestly, I haven't. I've just been busy with all the other stuff that interferes with knitting...you know, life! Must create art so I can pay the yarn bills!!! :)

Today, I became a new One Skein Pal!! Well, the program director is calling us "One Skein Angels" now, because the program is technically over the end of the month, but some people didn't follow through. Sad, isn't it?? I mean, sign up, get YOUR stuff and leave the poor gal you were assigned to sitting there. Geez, the person who had my name is delievering her baby soon (hopefully TODAY!) and she managed to get some super gifts together!! I hope I can do the same for this new person!! I have some ideas, I am just waiting for her to answer the questions so I know what she likes (and doesn't!)

So, if you are waiting for my first tutorial...it's on it's way! I'm sorry, I have been working on a project for the gallery, and it is sucking up my time!!! I'm not even going to say this week!! Keep checking back and it will magically appear one day!! Should I hire a studio assistant??

Well, off to see if I can knit a few rows before I need to start supper!!! Knit on!!

Ok, I've been working on the shawl this afternoon. It was a beautiful day so I decided to sit outside and knit in the shade!! Knitter's bliss, right?? Well, did knitted lots.....8 inches or more worth. I then decided to watch some design shows on HGTV. I shouldn't have because I SCREWED UP!!! BADLY!!! So I tried to fix it....usually I am pretty good at this. I turned the tv off, cleared the coffee table, spread it out and tried to fix it, once, twice, three times.......so I ripped it out. It killed me.....but I did. Hey, I'm not a newbie knitter that can't fix things, but this was not my day!! ARGH!!! I just had to share my frustration......

So I'm going to cast on again and knit like my needles are on fire!!!!!

Promises, Promises

Well, where does the time go?? Does this mean I am getting older?? Well, yes it does!! My birthday was last week and my husband and I took a little road trip to NYC for a few days!!! It was so much fun. Basically, we saw shows and ate! Since I don't want to type all the happenings from last week again....you can read them here!

Since this is a knitting blog, have I been knitting?? You betcha!! I am making the "Cozy" shawl from Knitty magazine. I love the pattern...except......I am using sportweight yarn. While very dleicate looking and pretty, it is exceptionally s-l-o-w! The five skeins of Lorna's Laces Sport, rolled into balls, looks pretty daunting in the basket. Hopefully I will not need all five skeins, becuase the colorway would look rockin' in the "Branching Out" scarf!!

And I know it is August, but I need to get my Christmas list going and see what I need to make, and who I need to make things for! I was thinking that the One Skein clutches were so fun to make (and I did hit the wholesale button shops in the Fashion district while I was in NYC!) and too cute, I might make a few of those. Use up the wool I have accumulated!

Which leads me to the tutorial. My goal was to have it done last week before I left, but obviously, I didn't so......I uploaded the pictures, now I just need to crop and label them and type out the directions.....this week...and that's a promise!!!

The Yarnaholic!

Well, I ordered more yarn......I don't need any more yarn! (hanging head in shame) But, I couldn't help myself. I ordered MORE Lorna's Laces for this..... the Cozy Shawl from Knitty. I am always on the lookout for the perfect shawl! I think they are elegant and versatile and warm in the "in between" seasons. My wonderful Secret Pal friend in knitting sent me the link and exclaimed I just bought some Lorna's Laces and it is going to be so beautiful. Ok, shawl + Lorna's Laces does equal beauty! So I bought......

And I found another Shawl in the book Alterknits!! I especially love this one because it is a shawl AND a scarf attached with ribbons. Perfect for travel. I can just see myself at some exotic locale, with this gracefully draped over my shoulders!!! :) I decided on Knit Picks "Ambrosia" in the "fog" colorway which is a dignified grey tone. Hmmm.. sound slike I will be ordering more yarn again. Oh well, there are worse habits in life. Being a "yarnaholic" is ok.

And I started "Branching Out" from Knitty. I am using the bamboo yarn from the One Skein Swap! This is a fun highly addictive pattern. So, I am working on that while I wait for my yarn.......

My husband remarked today that I have been so into knitting, I haven't made jewelry in ages!! Well, he's partially correct. I did start the Fall Collection, but it still needs necklaces and earrings to round it out.....so I might have to put down the needles for my jewelry tools.......for a little while anyway!!!

Has it really been a week???? I have been knitting but I guess not posting as much as I used to...sorry about that! And if you are looking at the blog and wondering what is going on, I'm changing stuff around...again!!!! I've also been having some bad migraines and sitting at the computer is the LAST thing you want to do!!

This weekend I hope to fix up this sad and sorry little blog a bit!!! It's supposed to be hot hot hot this weekend so sitting in the air conditioned studio is not such a bad idea is it??? I know I spoke of a tutuorial and you might be wondering where it has gone to. Well, the pictures are still in my camera so I will be doing that as well!!!!

Well, I'm off to work........I'll try to be posting with more frequency, so keep checking back!!

The Delinquent Blogger

Wow, could my last post have been on Tuesday??? YIKES...where does the time go! I am happy to report that I have been a bit more energetic!!! Let's see...I left off with a list of things I should have been doing.....

My One Skein Secret Pal project is finished. I am glad to get that out of the way!! I made the felted clutch from the book, and will add a few extra goodies in it!! It is still drying...have I mentioned it is a humid as all get out here??? My plan is to pack it up and get it out by next week!! I also have a few little gifties for MY secret pal who has been such a good online buddy since June!!! I will get pictures of it all before I send it!!

And I have been inspired yet again to start a new project! My Secret Pal made the Monsieur Cat from the Lucinda Guy book....and I fell in love. Since I have no kids to knit for, I didn't own the book. BUT, I put it in my library queue and picked it up today!! Wow, the patterns are terrific!!! As I sat in the drive through line at Dunkin' Donuts waiting for my coffee, I imagined cats in all different color combos.......guess what my next project is???? Look for pictures soon!!!

It's not the heat...

It's the humidity....I hate when people say that! It's something my parents who are in their 80's say! Or is it hot enough for ya! Well, it is and this humidity is frying my brain! I should be knitting, I should be doing something else...anything, but sitting here doing nothing. I have projects to finish, damnit! I am like a beached whale....I just want to lay there and do nothing.....as long as the neighborhood children do not come over and poke me with sticks or call Greenpeace!

What I should be doing....
1. Fixing this blog so it will be more ME, whatever that is...

2. Finishing my One Skein Secret Pal project so I can get it ready to send!

3. Finishing up the dog sweater, scarf, shawl and countless other object d'knit in the basket!

4. Winding up all that Lorna's Laces wooly goodness into usable balls!

5. Finishing up the cross stitch pieces I started long ago and have not worked on in months!!! (can you tell it is not my favorite thing to do??)

6. Make supper!!!

Well, I do have good news......NO JURY DUTY tomorrow!!! Yay!!! Happy Dance!!!! Maybe I will get around to all the projects.....tomorrow.........

Tutorial on the Way....

Ok, in between working on my Fall jewelry collection and getting more items ready to be shipped to the art gallery, I have been working on the row counter bracelet tutorial!!! To be theatrical, "it's in the can"!!! :) In my camera that is!! I wrote out each step, supplies needed, and photographed it all...phew...it's alot of work, BUT they are better made than just knotting some string and adding some plastic beads!! And I hope you like them as much as I do. While the thought is NOT mine and I am in no way taking credit for it, if the tutorial helps my friends or a fellow knitter, that is great!! My "demo" model will be for sale. And it will include a set of pewter matching stitch markers as well. Knitting has been slow, but I will be getting some projects lined up.....

Have I mentioned that I have jury duty this week?? All I can say is I better be able to take my knitting needles in the "holding pen" with me, or they might see my nasty side! If you are going to make me sit there for eight hours, let me do something, besides read......

I have a good book, some magazines, stuff to work on for my site and blogs, knitting....Mark asked me if I planned on staying overnight..OH God, I hope not!! It's the local court so I don't think there is anything more exciting than traffic violations. Should I wear a contriversial t shirt and wild hair so I look crazy??? Doesn't it sound like I am looking forward to it....

Now everyone say a prayer, think a good thought, send light, whatever......so I don't have to go...I know I will, but let's hope!!!

Well, just what have I been doing??? Certainly not knitting, that's for sure!! I have so much to catch up on too!! If you read my other blog, you know I have been in a creative "funk" these days......no jewelry, no knitting, no nothing. I have been sitting an watching movies and just being, well, a blob!! I seem to be coming out of my funk though and have begun work on my Fall Collection of jewelry for my site, West End Designs.

I ordered some beads to create matching bracelets to the Irish Hiking Scarves I have been knitting. My thought, hope and wish, is to finish a bunch of them and make matching bracelets and give them as Christmas (yes, I said that!) gifts!! Handmade lampwork and the gorgeous colors of the Lorna's Laces yarn. Who wouldn't want that as a gift????

I need to finish my final gift package for the One Skein Secret Pal. This weekend.....yes, I must!!!

Well, that's all to report. No new yarn, no new projects...check back next week. :) Have a nice weekend everyone!

For those of you who know me, you all know I have always wanted a kitty (I guess three puggies is not enough!!). My wonderful husband, still, and probably will continue to say "no" to my polite requests (aka begging) for a kitty!! I do have a "sponsor" kitty at the local shelter, but it is not the same...so...I went and adopted anyway......no, not a "real" one, a "virtual"one...

May I present, "Mrs. Stevens"!!! She will be on the side bar to my journal from now on......I hope you all say hi to her when you are visiting!!

Why Mrs. Stevens??? Well, ages ago I saw an episode of Bewitched in which Samantha turned her Mother in Law into a cat and went running through they neighborhood yelling "Mrs. Stevens" in a vain attempt to find her lost Mother in Law/Kitty. And I thought, what a cool name for a cat...and it stuck. So there you have it!!! :)

Let's see what else I can find to spruce up the journal!!!

Yes, I am completely blown away by my One Skein Secret Pal's gift for July!! Wow, that's all I can say!! Thank you so much Lynnea! Here is a photo of what she sent!! I have to show all the goodies off!! Take a look at this!!!

There is a skein of handspun yarn, a skein of Knitpicks Ambrosia, felted beads, stitch markers, 2 knitting magazines and a set of handmade note cards and HANDMADE needles!! Wow...oh and a Cadbury bar!! (Cadbury is my favorite!!!)

I have to think of something to make with the handspun for for right now I am just carrying it around, it is so soft!!!! I love the toppers on the needles ........it says "Knit Happens"!!! Aren't they the cutest??? I plan on making a funky fiber necklace with the beads!!!! They are so much fun!! I need to know how to make them!!!!

I am powerless to knitting supplies!

Ok, I should no longer be allowed to surf the internet looking for yarn and knitting related items....no more!!! I am powerless to their spell!! I was thinking of making some knitting row counter bracelets because the ones I have seen are VERY expensive for what they are. Basically leather cording KNOTTED and plastic Pony beads, and a plated clasp for $40 - 50 each...seriously. So, the jewelry designer in me comes out and I decide I can do better......So, I was taking a look at what was out there. I don't think it is something I will sell (unless a special request is made) but while I was surfing......I found this.....Namaste Needles

I remember my Mom teaching me to knit, it was acrylic or wool yarn and metal or plastic needles, that's it. No fancy fibers, no fancy accessories, not even bamboo....until now. Wow, I am blown away!!! I am putting this stuff on my wish list!!! It's GORGEOUS!!!

Oh, and I think I am going to come up with a tutorial on the beaded row counters so you can make your own. Any thoughts????

Ok, I am hanging my head in shame right now...I didn't knit at all over this long weekend!! I know, no knitting......what is that about???? Honestly I TRIED!!! I guess it happens every once in awhile, you sit down and start a project...a mistake happens, you fix it and carry on...then another mistake. I actually kept casting on the wrong number of stitches several times in a row.....that was it. A sign from the knitting goddess to wave the white flag of surrender!!! So, I just sat there, staring blindly at the television watching the Boston Pops and Aerosmith...which I also never do.TV=Knitting and that's just how it is, an equation not to be messed with, like the theory of relativity. TV = Knitting . I didn't dare start anything complicated because the situation described above kept happening with a dishcloth...can you imagine if I started lace, or a sweater???.........I shudder to think of it. Today is a new day and maybe tonight some knitting will happen....maybe......

I mailed my final One Skein Secret Pal yarn package today!! So, the next package is a finished item, and I have a few other goodies planned for her. I don't think she reads the blog (my identity was blown along time ago!!) but I won't say whatt it is, just to be on the safe side (I'll snap a picture of it for here after I mail it away!!). I will say though, it is a project from the book, and it is the only pattern in the book she told me she liked, so let's hope she likes it in person! :) I want to have it in the mail August 1st (it is due anytime in August) because I am leaving on a long weekend trip to NYC on the 4th and I don't want it hanging over my head!!! I plan on getting it all set THIS week.....yes, THIS week!!!! Can you tell I am looking forward to it ending??? I don't think I'm cut out for Secret Pal clubs. Although I will say, the person who has me as a pal is so sweet and I love the things she sends (Hi Lynnea)!!! I might try a knit along next. I can't help it, I am just NOT a joiner.........

I am hoping to change up this blog a bit soon. I have not sat down to work on it....even though I said I was going to but, hey, if you can't knit a simple dishcloth, what makes you think you can play with HTML......my blog would look pretty bad, and that I am sure of.....

I think I will go wind up some of my Lorna's Laces yarn and sit down after supper for some relaxing (??) knitting time.........

Yes, I am making washrags, or dishcloths, or warshrags...whichever term you prefer!! I can't help it, I love these little guys!!! I will have to snap a picture of the ones I have made so far......Who knew cheapy cotton yarn from AC Moore would cause such joy!!! And joy for a "yarn snob" too!! I am whipping them up like crazy here and there is no sign of stopping.

The people I have taught knit in the past know that I always told them to practice stitches and patterns while making dishcloths. At the end, you mastered a new skill and have something to show for it.......a good idea, right??? But, now they are back in fashion thanks to Mason Dixon Knitting! And I LOVE the patterns in the book and am so glad they brought them back into fashion!!!

And for all you flybabies out there.....they are very handy for shining your sink!! And if you have no idea what I meant with that sentence, go to this site.....FlyLady!! The site will explain everything!

I just might have to go to AC Moore today for more......who knows how many I can whip up this weekend.....and for those of you on my Christmas list...these just might end up under your tree this winter!!!!

Ok, I'm back....with a new project!! Yes, I actually put down the Irish Hiking Scarf long enough to pick up the Cabled Neck Cowl (called Cherry Garcia) from Hello Yarn. Mine is knitted in the Black Purl colorway from Lorna's Laces (of course!) Chunky Swirl! I really like how it came out, however, it looks much better on. But it's about 90 today and I really don't want to wear it....yet!

I also got another wonderful package in the mail from LittleKnits!! Oh yes, more Lorna's Laces......and you know how much I love it. I am beginning to hoarde it!! So, here's the picture of the recent acquistions!!! The red skein in the back is really the Bittersweet colorway which is reds, oranges and purples and so very pretty in person!

And I promise this week I am going to spruce up my rather generic looking blog into something spiffy and fun!! I just need to sit down and rework this template a bit!! And I also need to figure out how to line up the links to the right. You all probably don't notice it, but it is driving me bananas!!!! Off to knit a bit before supper.......

Spinning My Wheels.

Ok, I've been totally ignoring this blog this week. I am still here, and I have not suffocated under a huge stash of yarn!!! I guess I really don't have much to show for knitting this week. Basically, I feel like I am spinning my wheels here (hee hee spinning wheels = yarn!) But seriously, I feel the Lorna's Laces Irish Hiking Scarf is doomed...... this will be my second one and the first one came out so nice...I will get pictures....but this one, I don't know. I swear I have spent more time ripping the darned thing out than knitting it. By NOW I should be able to work the pattern in my sleep.....And I want it FINISHED!!!! My friends advice was start something new, and I did, BUT I don't like the yarn..it looks well, dingy. And I don't fair well with the "thick and thin" spun yarn.....So..... I'm just sitting here, spinning my wheels.......

We are due for a rainy weekend, so hopefully I will get lots of knitting done and will be able to show you more next week....
